Galaxy Ring is the first smart ring to offer FDA-cleared sleep apnea detection

Galaxy Ring is the first smart ring to offer FDA-cleared sleep apnea detection

Samsung announced during its Unpacked event yesterday that the Galaxy Ring will soon offer sleep apnea risk detection.

It also pointed out that when this feature becomes available later this year, Galaxy Ring will be the first and only FDA-cleared smart ring device to offer the functionality.

Feature set to go live in the fall

Samsung brought up FDA-cleared sleep apnea monitoring during its segment on the Galaxy Watch 9 and Samsung Health. Sharanya Desai, Samsung digital health lead, mentioned that the Galaxy Ring will be the first and only FDA-cleared smart ring that's available over the counter for sleep apnea risk detection.

That's not to say you're supposed to entirely rely upon the Galaxy Ring to diagnose sleep apnea. Like other health and wellness features offered by wearable devices, they're only meant to track metrics which can help you understand whether there might be something worth looking into.

If it flags that you may have sleep apnea, that's when you're supposed to consult with a medical professional to get an actual diagnosis and treatment.

No further details about when this feature will go live were provided, but one can likely assume that it will be available at some point before the end of this year. There are several other wearable devices that offer similar functionality but none of them have the FDA-cleared badge, so Samsung's implementation will certainly stand apart.
